What is a DUNS number?

If you're building business credit, you'll run into the DUNS number fast and you'll wonder how it's different from your EIN. Let's dig deep into the simple answer: what it is, what it's for, and the the honest truth behind it.

6 MIN READ · BUSINESS CREDIT

A DUNS number (Data Universal Numbering System) is a unique nine-digit identifier assigned to your business by Dun & Bradstreet, one of the major business credit bureaus. Just like an EIN, think of it as a social security number for your company specifically for your business's credit. Its a permanent ID that lets lenders, vendors, and partners look your business up and track its credit history.

It's tied to a single business location and entity, and it stays with your business for life. More importantly, it's the anchor for your Dun & Bradstreet credit file and your PAYDEX score. D&B's measure of how reliably your business pays its bills.

DUNS vs. EIN. They're not the same thing.

This is the confusion that trips everyone up. You need both, and they do different jobs:

  • EIN - Your Tax ID - Issued by the IRS, for free. It identifies your business to the government for taxes, payroll, and bank accounts. Required to operate.

  • DUNS - Your credit ID - Issued by Dun & Bradstreet, also free. It identifies your business to the credit world and anchors your D&B business credit file.

Short version: your EIN is for the IRS, your DUNS is for business credit. One doesn't replace the other.

Why it matters.

  • It establishes your business credit file. Without a DUNS number, there's no D&B profile for vendors and lenders to report to or pull from, your business is invisible to that bureau.

  • Some lenders and vendors require it. Larger suppliers, net-30 vendor accounts, and certain lenders check your D&B file before extending terms.

  • It can affect insurance and partnerships. Some insurers and corporate partners look at your D&B rating when deciding whether and how to work with you.

How to get one.

You request a DUNS number directly from Dun & Bradstreet, and the standard process is free. Be aware D&B also sells paid "expedited" and credit-building products. You don't need those to simply get the number. Allow a few weeks for standard processing. Once you have it, your business credit file is officially open, and the next step is giving it something to report.

Another method to obtain it is through banks such as Chase and Bank of America. They offer business credit reporting features that allow you to obtain a DUNS number and monitor your business's credit all through their platform.

THE HONEST TRUTH

Getting a DUNS number is a starting line, not a finish line. The number alone does nothing. It just creates the file. What actually builds your business credit is the activity you run through that file: tradelines that report, bills paid early, and accounts that show a pattern of reliability over time.
